Welcome to educ 301
Primary Literacy and Diverse Learners is the first in a set of two courses. This course and Intermediate Literacy should be viewed as a whole – together providing you with the theoretical background, instructional strategies, assessment strategies, and critical thinking skills that will allow you to design, implement and reflect on an effective English Language Arts (ELA) program. It is the goal of this course to provide you with the skills necessary to provide solid reading and writing instruction for students in grades K-2.
EDUC 301 is a field-based course. For this course, you are required to spend 20 hours in a primary classroom. Early in the semester you will be placed in an area school where you will spend approximately 2-3 hours a week assisting a classroom teacher and working with a small group of students. The more time you spend in the classroom the better you will understand the complex decision-making process of the ELA teacher, and the more comfortable you will become in the role of “teacher”. Time in the classroom also allows you to work collaboratively with skilled mentor teachers. This is a wonderful opportunity to translate theory into practice.
